In Hungarian folk tales the scone became known as ‘hamuban sült pogácsa’ (scone baked in ash).
The word ‘pogácsa’ (scone) was first used around 1395 and originally meant a griddle cake/bread baked in ash and embers.
Until the end of the 17th century the griddle cake/bread, which was eaten like bread, was called scone-bread or scone-type bread.
